Defenders can make for stable managers capable of keeping clean-sheets, but Mauricio Pellegrino is the latest example of one who struggles to produce goals. Pellegrino replaced Claude Puel after the Frenchman didn’t deliver attacking returns last season.
In this campaign, it seems that Southampton fans are poised for much of the same. From the five goals the Saints have scored in seven league games, including three at home and two away.
The Saints have been strong in defence, conceding three clean-sheets so far, but they won’t be able to thrive in the top-half without goals. Southampton are not devoid of attacking talents, so the question is whether or not Pellegrino’s tactics are holding the club back.
Pellegrino took a bizarrely long time to introduce Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini alongside fellow striker Shane Long. The Argentine manager has attempted to promote attacking play in a 4-2-3-1 that utilises a lone striker.
However, the wisdom of that approach has to be questioned when Northern Ireland international Steven Davis. Although an effective central midfielder, Davis went the entirety of last season without scoring in the league – not exactly number 10 material, then.

Newcastle Utd are in a strong spell of league form despite manager Rafael Benítez being frustrated by a lack new players being signed for the club. This has not held Benítez back from leading the Magpies to ninth place in the league on the back of three wins and a draw from their last four matches.
Wins against West Ham (3-0), Swansea (1-0), and Brighton (1-0) have elevated Newcastle in the table, but one of their most impressive achievements was in fighting for a 1-1 draw versus Liverpool.
Newcastle had to surrender 68% to a more talented Liverpool midfield, but they still managed to create three more shots on target than their opponents. Meanwhile, Liverpool struggled to break through the Newcastle defence and could only get two of their 17 total attempts on target.
Naturally, the Magpies are going to depend on a the strong defensive partnership of centre-backs Jamal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark against Southampton, but they have some midfielders who could help them make a breakthrough and score.
Scottish international Matt Richie has delivered four assists in seven league games, while Christian Atsu has scored and assisted. However, their efforts could be in vain if Spanish striker Joselu proves continues to be wasteful with the chances that come his way.
Southampton have conceded five league goals at home, but they will expect to be stronger against Newcastle, especially with Virgil van Dijk returning to the starting XI for the 2-1 loss to Stoke City.
When combined with Newcastle’s defensive strength and return of just one goal away from home, this could be low-scoring draw. bet365 have priced the draw at 3.60, while under 2.5 goals is another potential market worth backing at 1.85.
