Everton v Liverpool Betting Tips: Match Preview
Now that Monday night has passed, we face the prospect of a Merseyside derby in which both teams will compete having each won 3-2 in the last round of Premier League fixtures. While Liverpool were able to fend off Aston Villa for a 3-2 score-line, Everton had to come from two goals behind to win 3-2 against West Bromwich Albion.
Ahead of his trip to the West Midlands, Roberto Martínez spoke of Everton’s potential to finishing within the top four. But that desire began to appear unrealistic following a Craig Dawson header after 54 minutes, making the score 2-0 to West Brom. Just a minute later, though, Romelu Lukaku was able to drag Everton back into the game.
Everton were already suffering the absences of first-choice fullbacks Leighton Baines and Séamus Coleman before John Stones was forced to miss the West Brom trip with a thigh injury. Being deprived of Stones caused Everton to concede twice against West Brom, with Ramiro Funes Mori enduring a tough first start. While Stones could return against Liverpool, his absence will make Everton a risk in defence.
In attacking-midfield and upfront, Everton will need Lukaku, Ross Barkley, Arouna Koné, and Gerard Deulofeu to continue their bright form. And having created two goals against West Brom, the Toffees will need Deulofeu’s creative passing again against Liverpool.
In their past six Premier League encounters, Liverpool have only been able to beat Everton once. Incredibly, the five other games have resulted in draws. Liverpool’s last victory came back in January 2014, with the outcome being a 4-0 thrashing by Brendan Rodgers’s side.
Liverpool have not had a good start to the season, having displayed defensive vulnerabilities and an inability to score goals. Before their 3-2 victory over Aston Villa, they had scored only four goals while conceding seven in six games. That is not the sort of return that will elevate your club to the Champions League.
After only just returning to winning ways, this is an awful fixture for Liverpool. Alongside Southampton and Swansea City, Everton are one of the trickiest mid-tier teams to play in the league. And right now, Liverpool are anything but prepared for tricky. Rodgers got away with his questionable 3-4-1-2 formation because he played a Villa team devoid of their star players.
However, Liverpool are now in a much better position because Daniel Sturridge is back in scoring form. Having the excellent England international back in the first XI will improve the entire team. His ability to connect with midfield will give Liverpool the chance to break down an Everton defence that could be deprived of young star Stones.
Make no mistake about it: Liverpool’s three-man defence is a makeshift setup that will not be effective for the entire season. By playing without dedicated fullbacks, Liverpool leave themselves vulnerable to Everton’s 4-2-3-1 formation.
Back Everton to beat Liverpool and this will net you odds of 2.50 with bet365.
