Finding a long-term successor hasn’t been a smooth process for Borussia Dortmund. Jürgen Klopp lifted the club to numerous heights, even reaching the 2013 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
Thomas Tuchel won the DFB Pokal, but was dispensed with after falling out with the Dortmund hierarchy. Following two seasons with Tuchel, Dortmund then employed Peter Bosz, who came to prominence for taking Ajax to the 2017 Europa League final.
Bosz, however, is now struggling to shape the Dortmund side. A 3-1 league defeat to Bayern Munich was preceded by consecutive 1-1 draws against Apoel Nicosia – results that have left Dortmund in capable of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stage.
Another result that proved damaging for Dortmund was the 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. Dortmund recorded a couple of high-scoring result in the league, but form has since dried up in all competitions.
On the pitch, Bosz has been uncertain of the optimal system or players to select, resulting in leaked goals and an unproductive attack that fails to exploit the flanks properly. Bosz has now failed to win in four Bundesliga games, and it could be five by the time Tottenham arrive on Tuesday night.

The 2016/17 Champions League season was a frustrating campaign for Tottenham Hotspur, who elected to play their home games at Wembley. This season, Tottenham have been more comfortable in Wembley – for European games, at least.
For Tottenham fans, the signs have been good from the outset, with Spurs beating Dortmund in their opening game. A 3-0 win away to Apoel Nicosia then gave Spurs a cushion at a time when Dortmund were struggling.
Pundits and fans expected Tottenham to lose away to Real Madrid, but the Lily Whites proved resilient and weren’t afraid to press their opponents consistently throughout the match. Manager Mauricio Pochettino deployed the same tactics for the Wembley encounter and was rewarded with a stunning 3-1 victory.
Tottenham are now riding high at the top of group H, but still require a point to clinch first place. Failing that, Spurs have the opportunity to play at Wembley against Apoel. Nevertheless, Spurs should want to confirm the group early.
And there is a strong chance to do so, given that the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, and Dele Alli can deliver goals away from home. The obvious concern, however, is that centre-back Toby Alderweireld could miss the match with a hamstring injury.
Dortmund manager Pete Bosz has retained a loyalty to deploying the 4-3-3 formation that is popular in his Dutch homeland, while also adopting 4-2-3-1 at times. Teams using a 4-3-3 can attempt to exert an advantage in the midfield, but fullbacks then carry greater defensive responsibilities.
For Tottenham, their use of a three-man defence is designed to let the wingbacks provide greater support in midfield and deliver a supply of passes to the attackers. Moreover, the 3-4-2-1 setup helps to avoid the overcrowding that can occur from the multiple attackers in a 4-2-3-1.
Tottenham are in a position to secure a good result, but the pressure of the occasion could see the Lily Whites only scrape through with a draw.
